Time was when the automaker Saturn was just owned by General Motors. This wholly-owned set-up seems to have changed its course and today, it’s a regular division and there is a lot of hype going around about its latest offering which will hit the road next year, that is in the spring of 2007. Towards the end of the last century, a series of cars began to roll out of this plant at Tennessee. The name was unusual and the cars that rolled out were quite unlike the usual GM offerings. This was a wholly-owned company but somehow managed to have an identity of its own, very different from its parent company’s Detroit culture. Their “S” series of cars began to roll out of their showrooms pretty fast thanks to their pricing which made people want to go and buy. The cars were available in sedan, coupe and wagon models and they were compact, well-engineered and low-priced. They were primarily meant to stand up to the Japanese cars and the way they were taking over markets all over the world.

With time, the “S” series was phased out and in came the ION series as well as the “L” series. The ION series was compact while the “L” series was a larger car which was based on an Opel model and was later replaced by the RELAY, a crossover vehicle which was a 7-seater. Saturn also brought in the VUE which was an SUV which they still roll out today. However, it did not add up to enough to pose any competition worth its while to the other cars in the market.

Up till now. Today they have a car on the anvil that is already generating excitement though it is poised for roll-out only next spring. Why this hype? The car will be a two-seater roadster. Very much like the Honda S2000 Roadster, both in looks and size, Saturn Sky will come with a soft top that can be manually operated, 18″ alloy wheels, leather bucket seats, a clamshell hood with a reverse opening and 4-wheel anti-locking brakes. The engine will be a 2.4 170hp I4 and it will come in both the 5-speed automatic transmission or manual options.

The price? It is expected to be high as it is a high-end product, with an up market target audience in mind. It is expected that around 12,000 will roll out a year and the price would be in the region of $25,000. Is this the beginning of a new road for Saturn? Till now, the image was that of a company that was low-priced, safe and possibly staid. New models seem to be on the anvil if reports are to be believed. All we can say is that the company seems to have jumped tracks somewhere along the way and seems to be heading into a new world with a new brand image to guide it along. In today’s world, it could only be a harbinger of great things to come!

No matter how far you intend to move, saving money is always a concern. With this in mind, many people look for budget truck rentals to help them save a few pennies along the way. There are some great options for finding cost savings during a move, but it’s important to make sure cheap truck rentals are solid and big enough to handle the job.

Getting a good budget truck rental will require a little homework. Whether you shop online to secure a truck and a great rate or you drive around your hometown looking for inexpensive rental shops, it’s a good idea to get several quotes. If you obtain at least three quotes on similar size trucks, you should be able to find the best to suit your needs.

But what kind of budget truck rental is really needed? Typically, a regular cargo truck will work just fine. The key to picking the right size is to figure out approximately how much space your items will take up within the cargo area. A good rule of thumb to follow when picking out truck rentals is to figure it takes about five square feet of cargo space for each modestly furnished room. Remember this figure is a ballpark, but it should help you along the way in finding the best-sized truck rental to handle the move.

Once you have the size in mind, it’s time to call around, hit the Internet or do some face-to-face shopping. Do take the time to get quotes from several companies as not all charge the same rates. You can find some serious deals on cheap rentals if you shop around smartly.

After you’ve done your shopping and have picked out your truck, there are a few things left you need to do before packing up and getting out of Dodge. Remember to do these things before driving off with a budget truck rental:

* Before moving day, generally the week before and the day before, it’s a good idea to check on your reservation. Not all companies have trucks available on a moment’s notice, so making a reservation and checking on it is important.

* Make sure you fully understand the contract for your budget truck rental. A cheap per day price might not be so cheap if the fine print has you paying $10 a mile for the use of the budget truck. Read the contract and understand your responsibilities under it.

* Be clear you know when and where to return your rental truck. If you’re moving across town, this will be easy, but for those trekking cross country, the instructions will be very important.

* Be certain you understand how to drive and fully operate the rental truck. This means having a handle on the truck’s driving features and also any create comforts such as the radio, power seats, air conditioning and so on.

Moving is a pain in the neck and the expenses involved can make it even more painful. A good budget truck rental can make the process go so much more smoothly, but it will take a little effort to find the best truck prices.

Hot rods have become very popular in recent years. Car shows are filled with beautiful examples of restored and custom cars, and car clubs abound in almost every major city. Most car enthusiasts would agree that the most exciting part of restoring and customizing your own hot rod is doing the work with your own two hands, yet many car owners fear that they don’t have the knowledge to do the work well. Here is where an education from a hot rod school can help, by teaching you everything you need to know to create your dream car.

Sometimes when creating a hot rod, restoring and maintaining the original body parts is more desirable than fabricating new panels. Depending on how badly rusted or dented the original panels are, this may require any amount of grinding, filling, and sanding. However, for many car enthusiasts, creating a hot rod means replacing body parts, a task which is made difficult by the limited availability of body parts for early automobiles. For these reasons, many hot rods require custom body panels to be made for them, a set of skills that, although they seem difficult (if not impossible) to master, can be learned in hot rod school.

Custom body panels can be fabricated using a couple of different techniques. The first method of creating body panels is to cut, shape, and weld metal to spec. Metal body panels tend to be heavy but strong, and can be repaired more easily.

An alternative to metal is fiberglass paneling, which is lighter but tends to shatter on impact. As its name implies, fiberglass is a material derived from glass that is drawn into long, thin fibers. Fiberglass has many uses, including use as an insulating material, but it is also well known as a material than can be used to form body panels on racecars and hot rods. Fiberglass automotive paneling is created with layers of fiberglass “cloth,” which is laid in a mold or shaped and sealed with a hardening liquid. Once dry, fiberglass paneling can be sanded and painted to create a sleek and shiny finish.

In addition to body panel fabrication, creating a hot rod requires knowledge of a car’s frame, and how to strengthen it. Many hot rods are “chop tops,” meaning that the original, metal roof of the car has been removed. Because the roof is a point of strength in the construction of the vehicle, essentially allowing it to hold its shape in an accident rather than folding up like an accordion, cutting the roof off of a vehicle cannot safely be done without reinforcing the rest of the frame and body.

Building a hot rod also requires that the owner understand the principles of auto mechanics. Expert knowledge is required in order to customize and install an engine and driveline designed to maximize the car’s horsepower. In addition, many old cars need to be completely rewired in order to function as a hot rod, as the old electrical system is usually not powerful enough to support a modern engine and other parts.

For most people, these jobs require hiring a professional, taking the owner of the car out of the loop and depriving him or her of one of the most exciting parts of owning a hot rod: the experiences and pride that come from putting the vehicle together oneself. However, a professional education can put the owner back into the loop. Hot rod school teaches car enthusiasts everything they need to know to perform these techniques with professional skill. Students learn what tools are needed to build a hot rod, as well as how to use them. With such an education under one’s belt, graduates of a hot rod program can do anything they want, whether it is to build their own hot rods, or make a living creating beautiful cars for others.

When you buy a car for the first time, you will be thrilled with the experience. It is a wonderful feeling when you drive away from the showroom in your new car. This is one moment in your life that you are likely to remember forever. In the happiness of the moment, you will be likely to miss out on checking whether your vehicle has come with all the mandatory car interior accessories.

Some Useful Car Interior Accessories

Very few first-timers will really even look for the mandatory car interior accessories before taking possession of the vehicle. The following car interior accessories are a must in a new car. In case, by any chance, your showroom does not provide these, check out with the manufacturer – and if the answer still is a negative, then buy it yourself. Some of the handy car interior accessories are as follows:

1. Floor mats – surprisingly enough, there are a good deal of cars which roll out of showrooms without floor mats. This is one car interior accessory that absolutely has to be there. Hence, in case your showroom really does not have floor mats inclusive in the deal, make sure this is the first priority on your accessory list.

2. Cup holders – they may seem standard on most cars, but in reality you may have to add a few depending on the number of sippy-cup toting kids you have in your minivan. You can find separate cup holders in department stores like Target as well as auto stores like Auto Zone. They come in a myriad of colors to suit any car interior and are well worth their money. This is especially true if you do not have leather seats. Spilled juice, coffee or worse still, soda can leave stains on the upholstery which can be an eye sore in the short run and get you less money for your vehicle in the long term.

3. Hands-free Cell Phone Holder – if you are on the road a lot and do not have the new blue-tooth enabled technology, a hands-free device can save your life and is required by law in some cities too. Some people even have a sticky-note dispenser or other kind of note pad mounted on the dash to quickly jot down a phone or reference number – while parked of course.

Other miscellaneous handy accessories can be a back seat organizer, a trunk organizer, a CD pocket for your visor, air fresheners and the list goes on. Evaluate what car interior accessory is important for you and make it something that adds value to your vehicle and your quality of life.

Buying a used luxury car is a smart and economical decision-if you take the right approach. Today’s luxury cars are built better and last longer than ever before. Purchasing the right used luxury car means getting more car and more fun options for your money. But according to one UK based used auto dealer, 3 out of 10 people are dissatisfied with their used car purchase! That means that if you shop for cars like the average person, there’s only a 70% chance that you’ll be happy with one of the largest purchases you’re likely to make all year! Here are some tips to make sure that you’re not one of the “other” 30%.

Get an inspection:
Would you buy a used parachute from an unknown previous owner without having it opened up inspected by a professional first? If so, then you probably aren’t the type to still be reading this article. Most of us just assume that if the car looks great on the outside then it must be fine under the hood as well. No necessarily so!

Though used luxury cars are generally cared for and maintained better than non luxury used autos, there is still a chance that the previous owner caused damage due to poor maintenance. It’s possible that there could be any number of things that have gone awry that aren’t visible to the untrained eye. It may cost $75 – $150 dollars for an outside expert opinion, but this is money well spent.

Choose your dealership wisely:
Who do you think chooses the used luxury cars on the lots you go to visit? Each dealership sets its own tandards about the kind of cars that it will sell on its lot. Just like any company has a decision to make about the quality of products it sells, a dealership does the same.

Just because you see the same used Lexus SUV at two different used car dealerships doesn’t mean that they’re both created equally. The buyer at the first dealership may have higher standards for where they buy their used luxury cars than the one with the multi-colored flags strewn across the parking lot. Even if the used Lexus SUV from the second dealership costs a little less, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a better deal.

Do your research:
Dig around online for answers about the used luxury cars you’re considering. Don’t just look at the manufacturer sites or reviews published when the car was first released. Look for customer reviews and recalls. Also get the car’s VIN number and visit Carfax.com to check for any prior damage. Oftentimes, the dealership will run and pay for the Carfax report if you ask.

If you know how to shop for used luxury cars, there’s no reason to worry about being in that unhappy 30%. By approaching car buying the right way, you’ll not only be among the 70% that are happy with their used car purchase, but smiling as you cruise by all those other car owners who paid up to 30% more for your same model car new!

This is mainly due to the costs in producing the hybrid. The technology that was used in the development and assembly are much higher and many experts believe that it will be a while before hybrids prices drop.

Mobile homes can be bought for a cheaper rate than stick-built houses in quite a few places in the country. Mobile homes are known to be the easy-on-the-pocket housing choice of so many people across the board and all this despite the common prejudice that tends to haunt it. The advantages are real but not immediately obvious. The main advantages are fast equity building. It is a half truth that mobile homes depreciate over a period of time. This is true if they are in parks but mobile homes on land generally go up in value.

Buying a mobile home with real estate very often finds it doubling in value in a bit more than 10 years. Of course the house might be in need of some maintenance but that holds true for all houses at some point of time. What does happen is that the value of the land goes up and the mortgage payments are lower than that of stick-built houses. Because of the seven year amortization, shorter than normal and the lower equity amount, you find that you build up equity quite fast.

For example a house with a $100,000, 6%, 30-year mortgage loan will entail a payment of $599.60. Now $500 of the very first payment will go towards interest and $99.60 will go to the principal amount. You find that you have built equity of $99.60. A mobile home on land, with a $30,000, 8%, 10-year mortgage will mean a payment of about $363.99 only. With mobile homes, a higher rate of interest is normal as is the shorter term too, and this means you have free and clear ownership of the home in 10 years instead of the usual 30. Here in the first month, $200 will go towards interest, which means $163.99 goes to the principal amount. So you see just how much more equity you are building.

A faster loan pay out may be due to the fact that mobile homes on land may appreciate more slowly than a regular house. Banking the difference in payments of about $235.61 each month will give you a better financial stability with the mobile home rather than the expensive home. By paying less each month you can build more equity. Since simple math is not part of the licensing agreement, your real estate agent will not tell you these little bits of important information and maybe you should not expect him to.

When you own land you can make whatever changes, modifications to your home and use the place according to your requirements. By renting rooms, you can do well money wise. This is a major advantage when you own the land as well as the home. Mobile homes are cheap to maintain too. Things like windows, plumbing, doors, etc are all that much cheaper. So are the fitting costs for plumbing and electricity.

Did you know that because property taxes are based on value, it is less on mobile homes and the insurance is lower, too? But ensure that you are eligible for insurance before you make any purchase as some areas don’t insure old mobile homes. On the other hand it would not make much sense to buy a mobile home if the prices for houses were as low in the same area.

Getting a great deal on an automobile purchase is nearly impossible, but there are places to turn for good buys and even better cars. One such place is a repo auction. But, many people don’t quite understand what repo auctions are and they don’t seem to realize what hidden treasures can be found at them.

Let’s look at some of the top questions and answers surrounding repo auctions:

What is a repo auction?
A repo auction is one that’s held on behalf of banks and other lenders to help liquidate merchandise that’s been defaulted back into the bank’s ownership. Everything from houses and cars to boats and trucks can be had at repo auctions. In the automotive market, a repo auction can be a very good place to get a good deal on a vehicle that’s newer and generally in pretty good shape.

Why do banks take part in repo auctions?
Banks that write car loans or mortgages don’t want to own a fleet of vehicles or a neighborhood of homes. They want the interest earned on the loan, not the merchandise. To help them recover the financial loss experienced in a default, they often host auctions to recoup their money. This doesn’t mean the bank will necessarily let a car go for thousands and thousands less than its value, but since it really is only interested in covering its loss, savings likely will be realized. Sometimes the savings can be great.

What kind of cars can be found at repo auctions?
Just about any type of car, truck or van that a bank will write a loan for can be found at a repo auction. Typically these are newer model vehicles that are worth the “risk” to the bank.

What is the condition of vehicles at these auctions?
That will vary from vehicle to vehicle quite honestly. Most vehicles are in very good shape, but that doesn’t mean all of them are. It’s important to ask questions about items you might bid on. Don’t take it for granted the car is in perfect working order.

Are their warranties on purchases from auctions?
Sometimes. Generally, the banks themselves auction the cars off “as is,” but it’s possible manufacturer warranties will extend to the purchase. It will all depend on the banks, the cars in question and who made them.

What kind of deals can be had?
Again that will depend on the car in question and the loan that was outstanding on it, but generally you can pick up newer cars for a fraction of the sticker price by going to auction. Of course, you have to place the winning bid to do so.

How do you find these auctions?
They are generally listed in newspapers, magazines, on television and there are even special computer programs that know exactly where to look to find upcoming auctions. Some of these programs can sort auctions by those that have particular cars, too.

A repo auction is a different way to buy a car, but the truth is it can be a great way to do so. There’s no reason to pay full price, but it is a good idea to exercise judgment and look carefully before bidding.

If you’re in the market for a new car, but you can’t afford the high price of retail, visiting a government auction in person or online can be a smart way to go. Government auctions are notorious for having some of the best automobiles going at a fraction of the prices you’d pay from a dealer or private owner.

Government auctions can be found in all kinds of jurisdictions, ranging from small, local authority auctions to large federal auctions. They can include everything from the top of the line, just released vehicles to older cars that have been well cared for in a government fleet.

Let’s take a look at some of the types of vehicles that can be found at government auctions:

Newer model cars, trucks, light vans
The newer cars found at government auctions are generally those that have been seized from suspects by various law enforcement agencies. This means they might not be in tip top condition, but they could be, as well. In these cases, the government auctioning authority will be interested in making as much money as possible, but the fact is these cars can end up selling for a real steal. No law enforcement agency can afford to store an endless amount of vehicles seized from drug dealers or other bad guys.

Middle of the road cars
Many government agencies have a policy that dictates how old cars in their fleet can be. Once they reach this point, regardless of mileage, they are auctioned off and new vehicles are purchased. These cars can be very good buys and generally have been cared for within a fleet system, so they’re practically guaranteed to have all their maintenance in place. They can be very good buys for those interested in government auctions.

Older vehicles
These, too, can be found at government auction. Whether they are retired fleet or seizures, some of these vehicles can be purchased for a fraction of their real value. If you’re looking for a particular type of car, or a classic, don’t discount a government auction as a place to look.

Now that you understand just about any kind of vehicle can be found at government auction, let’s look at the types of agencies that might host auctions:

Local law enforcement
These government auctions are favorites of those who want newer models cars. Since many states allow their local agencies to maintain some of their seizures to sell and purchase newer equipment, it’s possible to get your hands on a brand new car for a fraction of its sticker price by going this route.

State auctions
These can include a combination of fleet retired vehicles and seizures. Here you can find everything from standard government issued cars to the latest sports vehicles.

Federal auctions
The many agencies within the federal government also host their own auctions or combination auctions. At these you can find a variety of different types of cars, trucks and light work vehicles, too.

Government auctions are fantastic for finding really good deals on a variety of cars and trucks. Since the agencies aren’t looking to make a “profit” per say, the prices on the starting block can be more than reasonable.

While it’s true almost no one wants to pay extra for a car rental, sometimes the insurance add ons can be very smart buys. A lot will depend on what your private auto insurance covers, but when it’s needed, renter’s insurance can be a real lifesaver.

The best bet to make sure you have the right rental car insurance coverage before you sign a lease is to check with your private insurance company before getting a rental. In many cases, private insurance will cover a lot, so the add on buy might not be worth the expense. However, the only way to know for sure is to ask, so make sure to do so.

If you do need rental insurance, you’ll find there are several different types you can buy. Let’s take a look at the main types of add on insurance:

Collision damage or loss damage waiver: This type covers everything, including the deductible, in the event of a crash. This might not be needed for some private insurance policy holders, but it can be a real money saver in an emergency for those who do need it. This coverage is generally fairly inexpensive. Do remember to check with your company before buying this type. It’s very possible you already have it. If paying by credit card, also check with the credit card company before buying this option as some credit cards cover this, too.

Personal accident coverage: This insurance option covers accidental death and medical situations for the renter and passengers. Many times this coverage is not needed as personal insurance on your own car tends to travel with you. Be safe though and ask before you turn this down. It generally isn’t very expensive, but what it covers can be.

Property coverage: There is an option that will cover all your belongings in a rental car from such things as loss, theft or even destruction in an accident. Again, private auto insurance policies will generally travel to the rental car and cover these things, but do find out before you turn it down. This type of auto coverage is generally pretty cheap, and it can be very welcomed if it’s needed.

Liability: Here and again this type may not be necessary for those who have their own private insurance, but it’s a very important coverage if it’s needed. Liability covers you from claims made by others for injury, death and/or property damage.

Many of the major dollar rent auto insurance coverage types available might not be necessary purchases if you have good private auto insurance, but it pays to find out. Being covered in a rental car can be a very big deal if there’s an accident or theft takes place. Nothing can ruin a vacation quicker than an uncovered accident. Check with your insurance company to be sure, and if you’re not covered, cheap car rental insurance can help.
